A website isn’t “finished” on launch day. WordPress, plugins and the server change all the time, and a site nobody looks after breaks down slowly, usually without you noticing. These are the signs we see most often when we’re called in to “rescue” a site.
01It loads slower than before
If the site has slowed down without you changing anything, the usual culprits are plugins that have grown, a database that has filled up or images uploaded without optimization. Every second of delay costs you visits and sales.
02WordPress has been asking for updates for months
Pending updates are the most common reason a site gets hacked. The catch is that a rushed update can “break” something, which is why we test on staging first.
03Forms don’t send or emails end up in spam
You often find out when a customer tells you they wrote to you and never got a reply. Checking your email settings (SPF, DKIM) and sending a test message every month prevents it.
04You don’t know when the last backup was taken
If the answer is “the host probably does it”, that’s not enough. You need backups stored off the server and, above all, tested to make sure they restore.
05Errors or blank pages appear
A “critical error” message or a white page means a plugin conflict or an old PHP version. As long as it stays, you lose visitors and Google rankings.
06Google Search Console is sending you warnings
Pages that aren’t indexed, mobile problems or poor Core Web Vitals directly affect how easily people find you.
07Nobody “owns” the site
The developer who built it isn’t available, and nobody knows the passwords, the hosting or the domain. This is the most dangerous sign, because when something breaks there’s nobody to fix it quickly.
Start with a technical audit. You'll see what state your website is in and what needs fixing, in order of priority, before you decide on anything else.
